On the block – 20

A weekly series of posts highlighting interesting Grand Seiko watches on the market

Due to time constraints, a shorter column this week that features just a single watch currently available on Yahoo Japan. If you need some guidance and advice as to how to go about buying watches from Japan, check out my feature on ZenMarket.

I was actually hoping to include this listing in last week’s VFA round-up, but the seller hadn’t re-listed it. It’s a rather special Grand Seiko 6186-8000-G VFA that has been on-and-off the market for the last few weeks.

For this week’s On the Block, I thought it would be interesting to do a round-up of the Grand Seiko VFA’s that are currently available on the market in Japan. The reason for focusing on the VFA’s is that I can’t recall a week where there has been such variety for sale.

A weekly series of posts highlighting interesting Grand Seiko watches on the market

In this week’s “On the block”, rather than pick a single listing from each of the three main channels for purchasing vintage Grand Seikos from Japan – that is, Yahoo Japan auction, Rakuten, and individual dealer websites – I’m going to highlight three listings all from Yahoo Japan auctions that will be very interesting to watch over the weekend.

All three listings are for examples of the very first vintage Grand Seiko Chronometer, often referred to simply as the “First”, or alternatively by the reference number of its movement, the “3180”.

For the first time that I can remember, this week on Yahoo Auctions there are examples of Printed, Carved and Applied “Grand Seiko” logo dials. All three auctions close Sunday evening Tokyo time -if you have the money, this is an amazing opportunity to pick up a complete set of 3180’s within just a couple of hours bidding.

Or is it?

A weekly series of posts highlighting interesting Grand Seiko watches on the market

“On the block” is the section of the website where I share some examples of vintage Grand Seikos currently available on the Japanese market.

I aim to publish a new post in this category each Friday, highlighting a vintage Grand Seiko of interest from each of the three main channels for acquiring these pieces from Japan – Yahoo auctions, Rakuten, and individual dealers’ websites.

Demand for the first vintage Grand Seiko has clearly increased substantially since the Baselworld 2017 release of the re-creations of the original watch as limited editions in platinum, gold, and steel.

Prior to Baselworld, prices for the “3180’s” had been steadily increasing, with good examples of the applied logo dials selling for up to 200,000 Yen.

Since Baselworld though, prices have sky-rocketed. And I don’t think it’s hard to understand why.

I aim to publish a new post in this category each Friday, highlighting a vintage Grand Seiko of interest from each of the three main channels for acquiring these pieces from Japan – Yahoo auctions, Rakuten, and individual dealers’ websites. However, sometimes there just isn’t much new worth highlighting, so that may have an impact on what gets written up.

Generally, it is becoming clear that demand for vintage Grand Seikos is outstripping supply. The Grand Seiko “First” is a good indicator of this. Whereas just a few months ago, you would typically expect to find more than half a dozen examples available on Rakuten at any one time, as of today, there is just a single (terrible) example.

As to how to go about actually purchasing from overseas, check out my article on ZenMarket.

This week, I will be highlighting just two watches. One from a dealer’s website, and one from Yahoo – there is nothing new and noteworthy on Rakuten (although a few watches that I have featured in previous posts are still available).

I will also be making an exception this week and highlighting a watch that isn’t actually a Grand Seiko (although many people do list it as such!).

This week I’m just going to link to a single watch that is up for grabs, as I want to go into a bit of detail about it, and explain why it is so interesting.

This week’s featured vintage Grand Seiko from a Japanese dealer’s website should need no introduction to regular followers – it’s only the second example to surface in the last eighteen months of what I believe to be the absolute pinnacle of any vintage Grand Seiko collection. The 4580-7010 VFA.

Back in 2015, I decided to add some Grand Seikos to my watch collection. Whilst I had been interested in the brand for some time, I had never actually had the chance to appreciate the watches properly in person until I made a trip to Baselworld in March of that year.

Having for the first time had the opportunity to handle some watches from the range, I resolved to add an example of each of the main movement types – quartz, mechanical, and Spring Drive – to my collection,  which at that stage comprised entirely of Swiss timepieces.

Without a Grand Seiko dealer in Dubai, I had to resort to researching for suitable watches online, and soon started to discover just how much choice there was out there.

In a departure from the usual posts, this week the item highlighted from Yahoo Japan Auctions will be one that I recommend you do not buy.

To discover how to remotely acquire watches from these channels, check out my article on Zenmarket on the “Buying from Japan” page of this site.

As usual, I will be using photos of watches from my own collection to illustrate what is available, but do of course click through the links to check the specific details of the watches being sold.

After a fairly extended lull in interesting pieces coming to Yahoo Auctions so far this year, this week things have really picked up. There are some great watches across much of the vintage Grand Seiko range to be found, but also a small handful that should be avoided. And for a change, I thought it would be interesting to focus on a watch that you shouldn’t be considering.

“On the block” is the section of the website where I share some examples of vintage Grand Seikos currently available on the Japanese market.

This week returns to the normal format of highlighting one watch available from each of the three main channels that it is possible to remotely source watches from Japan – Yahoo Japan auctions, Rakuten, and websites of individual dealers.

To discover how to remotely acquire watches from these channels, check out my article on Zenmarket on the “Buying from Japan” page of this site.

Over the past few weeks, there has been a bit of a tendency for me to highlight watches towards the top end of the price range of vintage Grand Seikos. I thought this week it would make sense to find some good examples of more readily available pieces on the market that are not so expensive as those featured recently, and that would make great starter pieces for anyone looking to build a collection.

As usual, I will be using photos of watches from my own collection to illustrate what is available, but do of course click through the links to check the specific details of the watches being sold.
